protect files on XpHome network?
OK here's the setup (and I'm sure there is a better way, I just don't know what I'm doing)
a couple Mac's (OSx) and a couple PC's (using XP home) on a simple MShome network. I don't have any problems with the Mac and PC thing, my concern is that I sometimes have visitors that I would like to access the internet via a WAP, but I don't want them to be able to access the other computers. Any easy solutions? thanks in advance. j |

Password protect the shares. If they aren't already, and this is wireless, you have much more to worry about than just your visitors. That is to say, your welcome visitors- because anyone on the street could be looking through your stuff if this network isn't protected.

You can't password protect the XP home shared file/folder, you can only share file or folder with user/group permission in XP pro. So the best way is disable file/folder sharing unless it's really needed and enable Windows firewall.
However you can better secure your wireless network by configure it properly. Check this out.. Wireless Network Security |

I was afraid that it was a XP pro versus home problem. If I upgrade the computers to pro can I put a simple password access to the files that I want to share? any 3rd party software companies that have created something like this for home users? thanks again. j
