Does networking compromise speed?

I have a stand-alone computer; if I were to buy another one and connect them, would the computer I'm currently using become any slower?

No it wouldn't.

However if you share an internet connection between the 2 computers, download/upload speed will obviously be shared between the 2.

However, if one is not active, the other would have full speed access to the Internet. I have a 15mbit/2mbit connection, and as you can see, all of it is available on this system. There are six other computers, and a number of TCP/IP devices on my network right now.
