Router keeps disconnecting (restarting?)
Hi,
This is how my home network is set up: ![]() For the last two years, instead of the WRT54GC (wireless grey router), I used to have a D-Link DI524 Wireless router. Everything worked fine on all computers, internet, file sharing, etc... Then a month ago, I moved the router to a hot location and it overheated and was permanently damaged :( So thats when I bought a new WRT54GC as a replacement. So the setup in the image is what I have right now. First of all, the control panel on the WRT54GC is SUPER SLOW, probably a side-effect of making it so tiny. But I digress... on to my problem... Everything will be fine one moment, and then BOOM, all of a sudden the internet isn't working on any computer, file sharing is not working... and then just like that its back... gone again... back... for half an hour it'll do this dance. Then everything will be perfect again for a few hours. Since both file sharing and internet are affected, I have ruled out the ISP. Since both wired and wireless comps are affected, I have ruled out faulty wireless settings. So then I thought maybe the wireless router is restarting itself over and over for some reason, but the interesting thing is that when this weird stuff happens, none of the computers say that network connection has been lost. So its like the router stays on but refuses to do any work. These periods of intense disruptions last about half an hour, and are becoming more and more frequent. I even bought a brand new Linksys WRT54G router (non-compact version) and it had the exact same problem... although its control panel was much faster to use. So basically this started after I burnt out my old D-Link wireless router. Do all wireless Linksys routers have such problems? Or did I mess with the wrong setting. All I have changed on the router since buying it is update to the latest firmware, and ofcourse change the admin password and mac filter.

A friend of mine suggested that bit-torrent causes routers to maintain very large NAT tables, since it connects you to a network of thousands of seeds and leaches. And these large tables can easily overwhelm the small memory of a linksys router, which causes slow down of normal operations.
Well, we do use bit-torrent a lot, so I'll stop that and see if conditions improve :)

Yep, and note that we don't provide any support for P2P applications or the problems they cause.
