Changing Default IP scheme

What is an acceptable range to configure my home network with, other than the default 192.168.0.1?

My System

Yes
Any non-routable private IP address scheme will work.

10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255

Actually, that's not really true. Most SOHO routers only deal with class 3 networks, so you'll need a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

How does that change?

To configure the IP address range on my router you change the IP address of the router...all fields are available for changing. Can you give me a number to place in that field that is totally different than the default.

The way I've done it was by setting a static IP on the computer, change the DHCP scope, then change the IP of the router. Reboot the router, then change the TCP/IP properties of the computer back to DHCP. If the computer does not get an address, then put a static address that is in the same scope of the router so you can log into the router to trouble shoot.
Or do what I did and load Win2K3 on a leftover box and set it up as a DHCP, DNS, and file server.

Yes, since that defines a class C network.
