First question I would ask is just how close will the 2 units be when working together. If they will always be in the same room, and can be tolerated as being joined by cable, then a simple crossover cable would suffice plus configuring the networking options.
If you want to be able to access the desktop from the laptop (to access the internet or the desktop) from anywhere in the house/apartment then wireless is the way to go. Once again though you will need to configure your network connections. Don't forget that wireless also requires a few tweaks to ensure that no-one apart from authorised users gain access. Make sure that you have a firewall that supports wireless, plus software for antivirus and spyware to cover your system. Whilst a non-networked computer MIGHT be lucky enough to get away without precautions, once on the internet you are a sitting duck if you don't take preventative measures. You'll need to cover both machines separately. I'd suggest Zone Alarm & Grisoft AVG at the present time. If you want to spend time rewiring your home so that every room has a dedicated network connection then you could use an DSL switch or DSL router and cables.

I would not screw around with Bluetooth for networking the two systems. If you want wireless, look into 802.11g equipment, similar price but more more network friendly.
