Choosing a PC for Home with No Landed Phone
Hi,
I am posting this on behalf of my Manager who lives in Cailf. in a home with no landed phone service; he depends on his cell. Wut would he need if he bought a lappy to use wireless at home?....essentially turn his home into a hotspot I guess, given he says decent cable service is not available in his remote area. I could be wrong (and hope I am!)...but wouldn't the total capital outlay add up to the cost of a small island somewhere? Does he have other other options? Thanks much, Jill Last edited by Ariesjill; 11-22-2006 at 12:15 AM. |

well what he could do is get something with the speeds of dsl then get a skype phone with a skype in and out number and use that as his phone ....
he can connect to the internet, if thers no way of using a landline from able or dsl, via a pcmcia adapter from like sprint or tmobile to connect to the net. also some modern phones (my 2 year old siemens does this) connect to the computer via a usb cable then use the cell phone as a wireless connection. the cell phone internet is expensive tough. otheroptions ... satelite internet ?

thanks :D and im glad to help
satelite internet can be had from directTV i think for around 39$ a month wich is up to DSL speeds the internet from sprint wich is plugged into the pcmcia slot on the laptop costs around 49$ a month with ISDN speeds (about half of that of regular DSL) that should be suffiecient for regular surfing and also the Voip phone service if he wants todo that.

Final Report
Just to close this dossier.....my friend & Manager out in Calif.....could not find a sat provider 4 under $80 a month.....but was, finally able to convince Time-Warner to come out and hook him up via cable.....from what J box in the sky, I do not know. Aaaaand, for first 12 mos, less than they charge here in NYC! Aaaand, at wut I assume greater bandwidth than any sat.
This is why he is a Manager, I guess. So it's all good now.....will be in couple of days...and I thank U on his behalf for all the advice and input. Jill
