Wireless internet connection takes a long time to establish
Hi everyone,
I have been using a D-Link DSL-G604T Wireless ADSL Router for the past 3 months. At least once a week (sometimes more), I encounter problems establishing my connection to the Internet. The router will be on, and my wireless adapter (Intel PROSet/Wireless) says I'm connected to my router. But I can't access the Internet. I can't surf the web, check email or even ping websites. So I usually reboot the router (using the web based interface). I also try turning off and on my router. Sometimes my Net connection is established soon after. But sometimes I have to wait up to 30 mins before the Internet connection is established (and all this time I have no idea if the connection will ever be established). I don't think there's anything wrong with my ISP, because my other PC which is connected to the router via a RJ45 cable can connect to the Internet no problem. Does anyone encounter this sort of problem with their wireless internet connection? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. |

Update the drivers for that Intel adapter, it's infamous for issues with older drivers. If this is a laptop, check the laptop manufacturer's site, don't try the plain Intel drivers.

Another thing worth trying is a firmware update on the router.
Note: ONLY DO THIS WITH A WIRED CONNECTION. D-Link made different revisions for most of their routers so you'll need to check that before updating. It's on the bottom sticker. The firmware update is a small file that you apply through the router's configuration GUI. For more details write back in this thread.

Hi ebackhus,
Thanks for your suggestion. I've checked with DLink and the only firmware upgrade they have is for ADSL2 connections, which I don't use. My current firmware Version is V1.00B02T02.SG.20041110. Is there anything else I can try to resolve this frustrating problem?? |

Re: Wireless internet connection takes a long time to establish
I am intrigued by the fact that the wired machine works fine but the wireless won't...but that you can still access the router config page from the wireless computer - but not other web sites. Is this statement correct?
If so, I am wondering if it is not a problem with resolving DNS host names on the wireless machine...since you would connect to the router with an IP... My suggestion would be to see if you can borrow another laptop and see if it has the same problem...or take your laptop to another access point and see if it has the same problem. I don't really think enough troubleshooting has been done to be 100% sure where the problem lies. |
