My os is xp and i have a broadband connection. When i connect everything is fine but when i click on the internet explorer i get the message page cannot be displayed. When this happens my email programme wont connect either. The strange thing is that sometimes they both work fine and then just suddenly stop working. I would be greatfull for sugestions.

Make/model of the modem and/or router. Also, how many computers use this connection?

Thanks for your reply. My modem is a zyxel prestige 600 series from a company called telecom plus, I do not have a router and just one computer. One thing I did not mention is that when I get the page cannot be displayed message and my email won't connect my internet connection is showing as ok.

The Zyxel prestige 600 is a modem/router.

How is your Internet connection "showing as OK" exactly?

Actually, all that means is that you're connected to the router. This could still be a problem with the ISP. We need to know what the status of the WAN connection is. You can access the router's setup pages and check the status of the WAN.

Start, Run, CMD

Type IPCONFIG

The Default Gateway address is the address of your router's setup pages.

hello John. As you can probably guess from my first few posts I am to say the least a novice. I found the default gateway address and all seemed well on that page but do i have to do anything else to check the status of the wan. One thing though when i went to the ipconfig the connection was working fine at the time.

When the Internet is not connected, go to the WAN status page and find out what it says. Also, there should be a "connect" or "Internet" light on the router, see if that says it's connected when your access fails.

There are a lot of zyxel prestige 600 series models, can you get an exact model number from the ID plate? If you have Ethernet capability from that router, I'd use it instead of USB. USB is problematic for networking.

The model number is 630-c1 and it is connected via a usb cable. I am not sure if i can use an ethernet cable for it.
