Attempting to set up wireless network where to begin
Hello! and thanks for being here, this is the only place to go for real help.
I bought a laptop and a wireless router - router is hooked up and I have internet on my main desktop which is wired - all is well thus far. Now how do I go about getting internet on the laptop? On the laptop I went to show connection and it said "windows could not set up a connection for this computer" or something of that sort. Note that I am very good at jumping ahead of myself. I eventualy want to set up a network containing 2 desktops and the laptop wirelessly but I will save that for later. Thanks in advance! |

You need to make sure wireless is enabled. usually a quick install guide comes with your wireless router to show you in about 5 to 8 steps how to set everything up.
The laptop needs to be set to obtain IP adresses automatically and need to make sure your wireless adpater is enabled. Now when you go to show connections or show wireless networks your network should pop up. If it doesnt then something is usually wrong with your laptops wireless adapter or the router not having wireless enabled. Try resetting the router and disabeling and reenabeling the wireless adapter in the laptop Once it shows up you can simply connect to it and it SHOULD work (computers never work right so sometimes thers always something that goes wrong for no reason) For setting up the two desktops, all you need todo is if you want to wire them then just plugin the network cables into the router and your set. You can also go wireless on the desktops by purchasing a USB Wireless adapter (~30$) or a PCI wireless adapter (same price).

Okay I knew it had to be simple, I'll try that tonight.
One more thing tho...(I have a Linksys wireless G) I ran that disk and it told me how to connect everything. But when I got to step 8 and press next it asks me for a password and then it starts checking my computer settings (to make sure everything is connected I suppose) after its done it still says step 8 so I press next again and it asked me for password again and repeat process. I figured It was finished so I click exit and it says "setup is not finished are you sure you want to exit?" This confuses me becuase if I try to press next it just keeps doing the same thing over and over again like I said. I know this is a commom router and its probably something simple I'm not understanding. What am I supposed to do next? Thanks I just saw this: USB wirless adaptor? The guys at best buy said I needed a network card that cost $70 for my second desktop if I wanted it wireless. I bought it, didnt open it yet tho. What should I have gotten? (If this helps: the second desktop will be on a different floor or the house.) Last edited by Berrybunches; 10-13-2006 at 09:44 AM. |
