networking between 2 pc's

I just bought a new pc and I'd like to transfer all of the files I want to save from my old pc and transfer them on the new pc. I bought a crossover cable like they told me to do at the store. I've connected both pc's and tried all day trying to transfer everything and it's not working. I've read different posts on the site and I still can't get it to work. Can someone tell me step by step how to do it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

i whent to the link above and oh my no help! im not runing xp pro just xp i need to get my info off the laptop to the desk top but i cant seem to make it work! i 2 have a cross over cord and i just cant get it to work and it driving me crazy!

All machines are must be in the same subnet, i.e. 192.168.0.x where x is any number. The subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 for most small networks.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. If you can't ping both ways by name, you won't get any farther.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

umm ok im NOT a computer wizz--can i just run "files and settings transfer wizard" ???

You can try. I normally refer to the "networking wizard" as the "networking devil", since when it doesn't work, it's more confusing than ever to get things going.

The only un-complicated way of doing this action of moving data from one pc to another is, if it’s a new pc (base unit and not a laptop) simply remove the hard drive from your old pc and place it as a secondary drive in your new pc, then just simply trans all the data you want and place the old hard drive back in to the old base unit!

this is only if your are unable to trans data via your office network.
