Cable disconnected... not!

Pretty sad that i'm a network + tech and i'm stumped...

I'm trying to connect a laptop and desktop. Laptop is a toshiba, with celeron and win xp, desktop is an emachines, with win xp. Both have functioning network cards. I connected them with a straight through cable and set them up using the home/office net wizard (to avoid issues). Ip addresses look great, everything checks out, except they both say that the cable is disconnected, which of course it isn't.

Oh, and both are on same workgroup. (I thought of all the easy fixes)

any thoughts,
Thanks,

"There are two types of network cables commonly used in PC networks - Straight-through and cross-over.

Cross-over: A cross-over cable is used to connect two computers via their NICs, without using a hub or switch."

Agent, to be a bit more specific, a direct Ethernet connection between 2 computers requires a crossover cable. One end is wired T568A, and the other end is wired T568B. So, one end of the cable is terminated green/white, green, orange/white, blue, blue/white, orange, brown/white, brown. The B end is identical except the green and orange pairs are reversed.

Here's both the straight and crossover wiring diagrams, CAT5 Cable Wiring Diagram.

Here's a page on making your own cables, HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN CAT 5, TWISTED-PAIR NETWORK CABLES.
