Wireless Network, No Internet/Printer/etc.
OK guys, this has been driving me nuts - I've spent two entire days on it so far:
Host computer: Desktop custom, WIN98SE, D-Link WBR 2310 wireless router, cable modem Client computer: Desktop HP Pavilion, WINXP Home, D-Link WDA 2320 wireless adapter. Network Magic installed on host - can't install on the client without an internet connection. After two days, I have finally gotten the client to ping the host & get a response. The host recognizes the client. Ping is all I can do, and describes my current state of mind. I've tried the D-Link setup, Windows setup, manual setup (which finally got it working). The host is 192.68.0.1. By setting the client manually to 192.68.0.2 I was able to get as far as I have. I've changed so many things so much I've almost lost track. The network is shown as dlink or as workgroup. I've tried to name it workgroup on everything I could touch, but that crashed it, so I set it back to the router default. WEP on or off makes no difference. Signal is excellent. Where do I go from here (besides the happy home)? Thanks in advance for any ideas!!! |

It is likely the cable modem has a router component, using the default subnet of 192.168.1.x -- Identifcal to the default settings of your D-Link router.
Set the D-Link to obtain its WAN address by DHCP from the router. Set the D-Link to have a static LAN IP of 10.0.01, Subnet 255.255.255.0 Set "Host" to have a static IP of 10.0.0.2, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Gateway 10.0.0.1 . Workgroup Name: WORKGROUP . Computer Name <= 12 Characters all UPPER Case, no punction marks . Any Network Share, same rules as Computer Name . All usernames must have Passwords. No hitting Escape or other means of avoiding entering a user password at Logon, including Auto Logon. Set "Client" to have a static IP of 10.0.0.3, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0, Gateway 10.0.0.1 . Workgroup Name: WORKGROUP . Computer Name <= 12 Characters all UPPER Case, no punction marks . Any Network Share, same rules as Computer Name . All usernames must have Passwords. Auto Logon permitted. . Disable the use of "Browse Master" Now power down workstations, router, modem. Power up modem, router, workstations. Test. It can take fifteen minutes to fully populate Network Neigborhood at times. .
