Limited or no connectivity... PLEASE HELP
Hi,
I just upgraded to a Netgear WGT624 wireless router. After a major struggle I connected my laptop to the network (wirelessly), but cant connect 2 other laptops to it with exactly the same setting, or so it appears. It detects the network, and even asks for the pass key while trying to connect. It then says "accuiring network address", and stays on that for a while. After that, it seems to be connected, but no network connectivity. It states "Limited or no connectivity". Any Ideas Please?? |

Limited or no connectivity means that your laptop is configured for DHCP service of an IP, Gateway and DNS addresses; but that for whatever reason your client DHCP request has failed.
A right-click on your network icon in the notification tray, Status, Support, Details will show that XP has assigned APIA addresses; default addresses in the 169.x.x.x range. . If you wireless adapter is from Intel, upgrade your drivers. There have been three releases in August 2006 alone fixing security and bugs. If this is XP with Service Pack 2, repair your Winsock service stacks: Start button, Run, CMD netsh winsock reset Wait for the instruction to restart your computer. Restart your computer. Test. If after the reboot your problem remains, run a network diagnostic and post the results back here: Start, Run, netsh diag gui .

You are not receiving DHCP services from the router. Your diagnostic output shows:
Description = Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection - Packet Scheduler Miniport DHCPEnabled = TRUE DHCPLeaseExpires = 04:14:07 19/01/2038 DHCPLeaseObtained = 15:25:57 30/08/2006 DHCPServer = 255.255.255.255(Invalid IP Address) DNSEnabledForWINSResolution = FALSE DNSHostName = VERNLAP DomainDNSRegistrationEnabled = FALSE FullDNSRegistrationEnabled = TRUE Index = 11 + IPAddress = 169.254.104.170 (PASSED) This is exactly what the results should look like if DHCP services failed for you. If this is XP Service Pack 2: Start button, Run, CMD netsh winsock reset Wait for the prompt to restart your computer. Restart your computer. Your network adapter: - Network Adapters [00000011] Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection PASSED Caption = [00000011] Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection has had several important driver updates in the last two months. Update your driver at the Intel site. .

First, make sure any security setting is identical between router and client; SSID, WEP, WPA, MAC address filtering, whatever. Must be right.
Second, if offered on the client software the opportunity to enable 892.1x authentication, do not checkmark this option. Third, you need to set your Intel adapter to CAM mode; see: http://www.intel.com/support/wireles.../cs-006205.htm .

Hi,
As per the last post in the effort to help me, I have checked every setting, and all is the same. last night as I left the wireless connection running, it worked a-ok. When I returned from work, it was disconnected, I could not release or renew the IP, and could not get it connected at all. Had to re-set up everything from scratch, at least it works now when I do it. Still drops connection on all 3 pc's. Could it be a setting on the router? Must be getting sick of me now... Much appreciated. Bill... youre the man! |

If you cannot release or renew the IP, clearly it is dropping its connection to the router and its DHCP server.
It is important you update your Intel adapter driver software. DId you do that yet?

This adapter: Description = Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG
Has had a history of high warranty replacements. Using the logs from this thread, talk to Tech support at the computer manufacturer's about replacing the card.
