Internet connection dead??? Please help!
Hi!
My internet connection died a few days ago without any obvious reason. Suddenly I cant connect to the net, read my email etc. I've been in contact with my ISP and he can "see" my comp and ping it but I cant still connect. I got a XP prof comp with an Abit motherboard with integrated NIC. I can ping my gateway(guess thats my adsl modem) I cant ping my DHCP server. (I suppose I must be able to do that) Now here a few things I've tried! Turn off, unplug all cables to modem, restart. Deactivate NIC, restart and activate it. Uninstall NIC, restart and let XP reinstall the drivers. Start in fail-safe mode with networking. open the command promt and run netsh winsocket reset Turn off the firewall but still no connection. I have run the "netsh diag gui" command and run a test and it does say theres a few errors. Since I got no connection home I'm writing this at work so I'm going to copy the output tonight and post it here tomorrow. I really hope that someone can help me with this! |

on your next post...
When you post next, can you give us the following:
(1) Output from tests (2) Setup of your home network. Specifically for (2), do you have a router that your modem and computer are plugged into? Or do you go straight from modem to computer?

Hi again!
I compressed the results from the netsh diag and IPCONFIG output into the attached file. Tried to insert the ipconfig image into the message but I wasnt able to do it right. The netsh has some expressions written in swedish so I sends some translation to simplify things. misslyckades = failure tom = empty There is no router or anything else between my comp and the modem. But there is 3 more ports on the modem that you can connect to so maybe there is one integrated? I only got one computer and that one is connected to the modem. I first figured my modem got damaged a few days ago when there was a thunderstorm but then the ISP should not be able to ping me? Thanks for helping out! |

Call your ISP. Read them your IPCONFIG results.
. You have a DHCP server at 172.21.248.215 that is not responding to pings . You have four DNS servers, none of which are responding to pings: 195.54.122.199 195.54.122.200 195.54.122.204 81.26.227.3 You have an IP of 85.225.1.169 with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.252.0 You have a Default Gateway of 85.225.0.1 in the same subnet as your IP If you had resolvable DNS servers, this likely would work. There is some mystery how your IP, Gateway and DNS information is populated as the DHCP server is unreachable. In the absence of DNS servers, you essentially have no internet connection other than by entering static IP addresses.

Ok!
I got it solved! Got in contact with the ISP but we couldnt figure out what the problem was so I managed to borrow a friends laptop, connected it and I could access the net. So... I got hold of a network card, disabled the integrated one and now I can use the net again. Guess that thunderstorm messed something up! Thanks for your trouble M8:s |
