no access to router
I've recently replaced my motherboard (now have ASUS P4S800D-X) and now am unable to connect to the internet. I have several other computers on the network, all XP Home, and they have no problems reaching the internet. When I set my NIC IP to static 192.168.0.11 I am able to ping the router (192.186.0.1) and other computers, and the other computers can ping back. But when I set it to DHCP, I have no connection. I have tried ipconfig /release and /renew but to no avail. The drivers for the NIC and motherboard ethernet are installed and show no problems. Any ideas?

Re:
The router is able to hand out ip addresses for the whole range of 192.168.0.xxx, from 0 to 255. There are actually fewer computers on the network now than there used to be, so I know there are enough addresses to go around. Thank you though--this was something I should have included in my first post.

First, try this Automated WINSOCK Fix for XP, reboot and test. If that doesn't do it, try this stack repair.
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Re: fixed it!
Using a combination of your recommendations, this thing is up and running.
I first tried WinsockXPFix, but that did not solve the problem. Then I tried the two commands. The first one--netsh winsock reset catalog--returned the error that the command was not found. The second one--netsh int ip reset reset.log-- seemed to work. But after a restart, the internet connection was still not there. So then I ran WinsockXPFix again, and that solved the problem. I can now connect from the network card and the port built into the motherboard. Thanks a bunch for your help! |
