Problem with networking

i brought a notebook from my work and i want to connect notebook with copmuter,i enter ip addres(192.168.1.1) on one and on other(192.168.1.2) then i go on network id on control panel-system-computer name.when i do that i need to restart notebook and now i can not log on laptop again. he say "the system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in password must be typed using the correct case". please help

what operating system is on the notebook. The problem sounds like the notebook is setup to connect to a domain (your work). This needs to be changed to a workgroup. When you get to the logon prompt, click options and see if a domain is listed. If so, click the drop down and choose local (this) computer to logon to. This is all assuming your notebook is NT, 2000, or xp.
