Win 2k server missing active directory

I've got a windows 2000 server that is supposed to be functioning as the domain controller. Unfortunately, I am unable to add new computers onto the domain; I cannot even find active directory in administrative tools. This server is completely convinced that it is not acting as the domain controller even though the computers that were previously on the domain seem to be functioning properly. They can log in, get to the internet, and see the server in network places. We would not have even noticed that there was a problem had we not tried to add a new machine onto the network.

At this point I'm almost ready to just create a new domain and add every computer onto the new one, but I'm still looking for peaceful alternatives.

I'd appreciate any input.

Have you ever been able to find the active directory application on this server before?

If you have, try to trace back and find out what configuration change you might have made that has taken this away.

If this is a new server you might want to put the setup disk in and make sure that all of the active directory components are installed.
