Home Network Access problem; \\Computer is not accessible

In common with many I have a network problem.
2 m/cs Xp Home and Win2K conected via a 3com wireless router
in a workgroup. Both m/cs have the same username and password
All worked (I think) fine and then the HDD died on XP home machine.
I bought a new HDD and install XP Pro (SP2) on this machine in place of Home.

The result: XP will access Win2K but Win2k will not access XP

I can see XP on the network. When I try to access it I get
\\XP Machine is not accessible. The network path was not found

I have tried the following:-
1) Running the XP network wizard on the XP Pro machine. No change
2) Checking the machines can ping each other. They can
3) Checking XP Pro has
Simple file sharing
Same user name and password as A
Firewalls are disabled
File and Printer sharing is enabled
"Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts" is set to classic
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa.restrictanonymous set to zero
but it makes no difference. Still no access

4) On XP
Administrative Tools->Local Security Policy->->User Rights Assignment->
Value was blank
Added Object types computer
network name of Win2K machine
The policy process seems to work 'cos it thinks for a while, and then
accepts Win2K. (Presumably it has found it can log on)
Sadly, when pressing OK it reports "Failed to save local policy database"
But despite this, the two computer names appear

All of which made no difference to the error message from the Win2K machine
\\XP is not accessible. Network path not found

5) Delete network name of Win2K machine and add the common user name.
The user name (machine\user) Adds OK and the usual 'failed to save
local policy database' message. The user name appears but I still cant access the
XP machine from the Win2K one.

This is driving me nuts.
Can any suggest what I should try next!

Although you have "disabled" the firewall in the XP PC, this isn't always 100% effective and its engine may still be running in the background. If it is a third-party firewall, have you tried leaving it running but configuring it correctly to allow access to the networked computers?

Yes. Its where I started before getting desperate !!
The (Norton) firewall is set to give access to IP addresses in the relavant 192.168 range. The Windows firewall is turned off.
Thanks for the thought

Possibly a silly thought but, having changed the XP PC from Home Edition to Professional, did you give the PC a new name? The Win2K PC may be trying to access a networked computer by name but that name no longer matches what it expects to find. There could be some settings deep in the registry that are causing confusion when it tries to access the right name with the wrong parameters.

...but this could be nonsense

Good thought but sadly I tried that (albeit it for different reasons - under XP Home PC Name and User name were the same which is difficult to arrange in XP)
I have the old name (I am not sure how to get rid of it) and the new name visible in Explorer.
Clicking on the old name gives reasonably enough 'Network Path Not Found'
Clicking on the new name gives 'Logon Failure: The user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer'
So at least its a different problem and still sounds like a security setting to me.
Thanks again for your interest

Ok So I found a solution eventually. Go to
Admin Tools->Local Security Policy->Local Policies->User Rights Assignment->Access this computer from the network
Set the value to Everyone
I tried lots of things from different suggestions on the web (Administrator; Computer Name; User Name; User Name\Computer Name) none of which worked.
Everyone did the trick

Which is enough to be going on with.

But it seems (from the options in Access This Computer where you can add a user or a group) that you ought to be able to limit access to, for example,
a specific compuiter on the network or
a specific user on a specific computer

Sadly I could not make this work. The nearest I got was when I used
ComputerName\UserName
I was then asked for a user name and password which I entered and was accepted. 'OK' produced a 'failed to save local policy database message' but nonetheless set up the value.
Sadly I could not access the machine from the specified computer and suername.

So How do I limit access to specific computers or specific users?

Scroll halfway down this page and see if the solution posted there helps.

I had already found this article - you notice it recommends (March 19) having 'Administrator' in the User Rights Assignment box but that did not work for me! (I just love the consistency :-( ). Its only down the bottom of the page that 'Everyone' gets mentioned (which is what worked for me).

I could not get any other value in the User Rights Assignment box to give me access at all. So I guess something else is broken somewhere.

But at least it has gone off the critical list!!
