Network card is 'bypassed' by system

I'm doing a fresh install on an old machine with Win98se.

My Network Neighborhood icon is showing on desktop.

Realtek NIC shows up in Network properties and I have
run the Realtek executable program for the driver.

Still I cannot use Internet Explorer. MSN logo wants to
install a card modem that is in the machine but not
connected.

I have reinstalled the OS to get rid of some previous
errors but I am still stuck.

Would pulling the modem card make any difference?

How can I check for the network connection to the ISP in
old Win98SE?

Will an 'ipconfig' do it?

This is a specific problem not the subject of most tutorials.

I've got the machine connected to a small network with
just a broadband router and a switch. The machine that I'm switching out of to do check this one out works fine.

So please be specific.

The endgame of this might be that the card is bad.

The question of immediate importance is: If one of the
pilot lights is out on the eth card, and the ipconfig is
fine compared with my working unit, can I assume
the card is dead? Or would a move to another slot
possibly or probably kick the card back in?

My earlier question was: is there another utility to use
besides ipconfig to check the status of the card?

Have you power cycled your router and your modem (with everything disconnected for at least 10 minutes)?
After that, you have to reconnect and power everything back.

By the way, ipconfig /all is the most basic tool in hand, but for a wider scope check out here:

Can the Windows 98 PC "ping" the router from a Command Prompt window? That should show whether or not the network card is functioning.

Also, in Internet Explorer's "Tools > Internet Options", in the Connections tab have you selected "Never dial a connection", because trying to open a web page shouldn't cause it to look for a modem, internet access is via the LAN?

Not sure about Never dial a connection. I'll try that first.

I've gone though the power shutdown on other occasions
but was confused here about what needs to be disconnected and why.

But first to the never dial and see what that does....

I'll see if I can do just now....

Ok, more weird things today.

I first tested the card for LEDs. I noted that 2 LEDs
always light from my machine that works (a Linksys card
rather than a Realtek.) I then made sure the room light
was low enough to see what came on on the Realtek.
Still only one light just a power up.

I moved the Realtek a couple slots over but no change
in LED status.

However, that slot change cycled in a 'new hardware
found' from Win 98, it asked for the Realtek disk by name
and I went through that install business.

So from this, the card is recognized by the machine
even with one status light out.

The weird part is next: simply clicking on IE on this
fresh install takes me to the MSN modem setup. I do not
get the IE screen to go to options etc to tell it to never dial.

That's where I am now.

Could this be a software problem from the install disk?

Would a different install disk (I have one) change this
problem with the setup? I don't want to take the working
card out of the working machine and change all the drivers over to check that variable.

I'll shut down and reset the router, but I'm thinking
that won't change anything....

I have not used IE for a long time. What is the
normal behaviour for just trying to click on and load it at
the desktop?

I have an installer for Firefox around here... may try to
fool with that as well.

Will check for replies soon.

OK, the options don't need to be accessed from Internet Explorer's menus. Instead go to "Control Panel > Internet Options" and select the Connections tab.

Looking back to your first post, I see that you have done a reinstall of Windows. That being the case, Internet Explorer will almost certainly prompt you to set up a new internet connection the first time it is launched, but you should be able to cancel out of that to open Internet Explorer.

Nope, everything failed with trying to get past that MSN
(not Windows) modem setup routine.

However, what DID work was installing the current Firefox build and the dsl access opened up.

Regards the setup, I followed all the detail from my ISP
for DNS and so on and that did not make any difference.

I prefer never to use IE anyways. The green status light is still working, the other one-- yellow I guess is still out.

Thanks again for providing assistance. I can only suspect that a reinstall of Windows from a different source disk might get rid of the problem in this thread.
