networking 101 lesson
So I am going off to college in the fall and the institute I chose requires everyone in the freshman class to purchase a certain laptop (from them because they load it with all sorts of software). It is an HP NW8440 Mobile Workstation.
Anyways I would like to be able to network it with the system I just built for myself since I have a few extra PCI's but I have not the slightest clue how. Here's the info: the laptop has 10/100/1000 Ethernet, IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless, Bluetooth networking interfaces (whatever that means). I would like to go wireless if I can do so cheaply. Assuming I got this right for my motherboard I have 2 PCIe x1's and a PCIe x4 free (cause I will be getting another video card for SLI). I don't know if it makes a difference but there they are. Thanks |

Do you have a router, hub, and do your other computers have network cards? That laptop is ready to go with whatever you decide to use (be it wired network or wireless). Now it all depends on your PC's.

nope
I do not have a router, hub, etc. My room with have a ethernet port (or whatever for internet, not sure what the institute has for a network, but the campus is wifi enabled) I just want my laptop and my system (see drop down) to be wirelessly networked.
Thanks |

Then you will need to have wireless cards installed in both machines. Once you connect to the school's network just make sure your two machines are in the same workgroup. You may need to map the network drive to get it to connect, and if you need help figuring that out just let us know.
