D-Link wireless access problem
Hi there
This is my first post so please go gently on me :-) I recently purchase a D-Link Wireless 108G Router (DI-624) and 2 Wireless Cardbus Adapters 802.11g/2,4GHz (DWL-G650) to replace my old Belkin router which seemed to have given up working. I am using Windows XP SP2 and have connected the modem to the router and Desktop PC using Ethernet cable with no problems. I have changed the settings in the the D-Link page to show a SSID which I created and WPA-PSK setting with an appropriate passphrase and saved all settings. I then put this info into my Compaq Laptop however my SSID does not show as an available network. When I view available wireless networks, it does show a DLink network available which I connect to only cause I wouldn't then have any internet access but I don't think this is mine as it is saying that it is open & unsecured whereas I have set mine up with a WPA setting. The other reason I'm pretty sure it'snot mine is that the closer I get to the router (which is located in the rear office) the weaker the connectivity...shouldn't this be getting stronger as I get closer? The Network Key in my network properties is much shorter in length than my WPA passphrase...is this correct or are these 2 different things. Sorry if it appears that I'm lacking in the IT knowledge department...can someone please help me get this going on my own network. Thankyou for reading my gibberish |

Disable the security on your router and clients until you get them connected. Once you have all working then implement the security.
Make sure that the SSID is set to broadcast.

Thanks for that.
I disabled the security and made sure that SSID broadcast was enabled and even reinstalled the D-Link card however it is still not showing my SSID under wireless networks available. Also, am I supposed to have the WLAN turned on or off. With this turned on, it cannot show any available wireledd networks yet the signal strength and speed is high and opens another connection icon (showing DLINK not my SSID). With this turned off, I only have the 1 connection icon with a very low signal strength (also showing DLINK not my SSID) |

Still not showing but for one brief moment it did show my SSID as an available wireless network but disappeared as quick as it showed.
I am only sitting about 10ft away from the router so the signal strength shouldn't be an issue either. Help me...I've spent the past 2 days trying to get this to work! |

Look for interference sources, 2.4ghz wireless phones are the most frequent offenders. However, wireless cameras and microwave ovens will also interfere.

It wasn't long ago that I tried using that very model of router that you have. Although I didn't have the same issues, I really didn't like the results. The unit has mostly negative reviews and many of them related to the router restarting itself every 10 minutes or so...
What channel do you have it set to? By default it is set up on channel 6. Try channel 11 and if that doesn't help, then try 1. I would also recommend turning off the speed booster settings. Let us know if any of these changes help at all.
