Many problems, please help!! (file sharing, firewall, automatic updates)

Hi,

Up until a few days ago I had a home network which was running just fine, now it's not and I really don't know what's changed. The only thinkg I've installed recently is apache 2.2, but I've since disabled that but am still having problems (even though I ran apache 2.0 just fine).

OK, so my problems are these:

Computer A is XP Pro SP2 and has a number of shared folders. Computers B and C are XP Home and used to be able to see the shares. Now I cannot connect to computer A from either B or C, but I can connect to B and C from A. I've tried re-doing the netowrk wizard, I'm on the same workgroup on all computers, I've tried 'simple permissions', and all the regular stuff. Throughout it all I was getting the "Logon Failure: The user has not been granted the requested logon type". I've since tried the Windows Resource Toolkit fix found here; http://www.techsupportforum.com/arch...p/t-73592.html, but no luck - though it did change the error to 'Access denied'.

Now, baring all that in mind I'm trying to change the user rights (local security settings > security settings > local policies > user rights assignment > access this computer from the network), but everytime I click apply or OK I'm just told that it's "failed to save local policy database"!

OK, so that's the tip of the iceberg... Other problems are:

The Windows Firewall options are greyed out and I've tried the various fixes around but nothing seems to work. Everytime I reboot my machine I'm getting the message "windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?". I always say yes, but it always turns itself off again. I've checked the serivces control panel and it's set to automatic.

The Automatic Updates control panel is on the fritz, too. It always, always, always resets itself to 'Off', not matter what I make the setting. Usually I have it on 'download but don't install', but on reboot and checking the status it's back to Off again!!

I've run AdAware and Hijack This, but nothing major comes up. I've run a Norton's Antivirus full scan, but everything seems clean. So please, wont some kind soul thrown some light on these problems for me? I'm going insane right now and pulling out my hair because I just don't know what's causing these problems or how to go about fixing them, and the Microsoft knowledge base is no help whatsoever.

Please? Pretty please? Someone? Anyone? (Perhaps you can detect the slight hint of desperation and insanity in my voice?)

My eternal thanks and first born child to anyone who can help! ;-)

Cheers,

Andy
