Linksys & WEP
Firstly, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section.
Secondly, I've just bought my first laptop with wireless and simply can't get it to connect. Whenever I attempt to connect, it asks me my WEP key and I believe I remember changing that when I was trying to set up my brother's Nintendo DS crap. Anyway, I tried going to 192.168.1.1 like I did that time, but it keeps timing out. I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 router that I use with the desktop as well as my old laptop - wired, of course. The address won't work on either computer. Is there anything I can do about this? I need that blasted key. edit: So, I've managed to reset the router so I can "connect" temporarily without a WEP, but now I have the problem of the wireless connection being "excellent" and everything, but not actually being connected at all. I can't reach web pages or anything. I just routinely receive a dial-up connection prompt. This is my first wireless experience, if you couldn't tell, and I'm about at my wit's end. TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.
For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log Next, open IE, Tools, Internet Options, Connections. Check Never Dial a Connection. To get the WEP running, first configure with no encryption, and get that running. Then, set the key on the router and the client to the same key. Use ONLY the hex key option, not the "passcode" option.
