Wireless - Prevent my Laptop from jumping onto other networks
Hi... I'm running Windows XP home edition and we have a D-Link Wireless Router. My laptop has a button on it to allow the wireless to work.
In my neighbourhood there suddenly seems to be a ton of little wireless networks, and my laptop likes to jump onto other ones for some reason (even though the speed of my home network is faster than those of other networks). I have tried to remove these other networks that are popping up in the menu, but they just keep coming back. I have no idea how to set it up so that my laptop will just go on mine and mine alone. It's very irritating while in the middle of doing things, if for some reason my neighbour turns his computer on, BOING, my computer bounces onto theirs, which is encrypted to where I can connect to it but no longer access the internet through it. I don't really know what all info you need to help me out with this -- it's just frustrating and we are likely going to start some online RPGs and I would absolutely hate for this to start happening in the middle of gaming. Right now all I can do is click the REFRESH button and hope and pray it will jump back onto my own network so I can continue to surf online. Thank you in advance for your help. ~Kaye |

Right click on the wireless icon in your bottom right task bar. Select "View available wireless networks". On the right side, click on "Change the order of preferred networks". Move your network to the very top of the preferred networks list. Remove all the other networks that aint yours. Try it out for a while. If you are still connecting to other networks, follow the above steps again. However, instead of removing those other networks from the list, click on them and then select properties. Go to the tab named "connection". Uncheck "Connect when this network is in range". Click ok to exit out. It will now say "On demand" next to the name of that network. Make sure the only one that says automatic is your network. From now on, you will no longer automatically connect to those other networks.
