What make/model is the DSL modem and/or router? Is this wireless or wired? What is the make/model of the laptop, and if it has a 3rd party network card, the make/model of the card. Finally, what version/patch level of Windows are you running?

For 98 or ME, Start, Run, COMMAND to open a DOS window:
--- or ---
For 2K or XP, Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

Check your DHCP client

start>run>switch to classic view>administrative tools>services>DHCP client

Right click on the DHCP client and make sure the service status is running. If it is not click on start at the bottom. If it is, stop and restart it. Also make sure the startup type is automatic.

With no information, what makes you think the DHCP client is stopped?

Grin

Experience. I see this error message a lot and the DHCP client often turns out to be the culprit.
