Modem problems (GVC / Conexant 56k)

Hi

Recently a friend of mine got his modem burned by some storm so he gave it to me to fix it...

And I'm not a noob to PC's, but I just can't make that modem work on his pc...

He run's XP Pro on Asus K8V-X SE board (if that make any difference)

Modem model is; GVC 56 kbps internal modem, Conexant V.92, and the product ID is (read from modem box); F-1156IV/R6D.

So, after restarting Windows, Windows recognized hardware, and I've run the driver installation from modem's CD, and it signed as Soft 56K modem in device manager.

Properties showed no conflicts, device manger showed no ?, X or !, but I was unable to query modem.

So I've d/loaded new drivers from GVC website, and some other, apperently compatibile with XP driver signing.

Neither of them worked, they just made Windows restart when clicking "properties" in Device Manager.

So...anyone got clue how to make that device work?
