connecting desktop/laptop to same cable modem
I am trying to connect my external cable modem to two computers. I am connected via USB to my desktop pc and I am wanting to connect the same external modem via ethernet cable to a laptop. Is this possible??? thanks

It is. If your cable modem has 2 outputs for ethernet, just hook one up to the laptop. If not, you need a hub to share the same connection. A little 4 port hub should do the trick. You hook the output of the cable modem into the hub, and then connect your laptop and desktop to the ports on the hub, and you're good :) You may need to install some software for the hub, but it's pretty straight forward.

Unless you're ISP issues multiple public IP addresses (rare), then you need a broadband router. You will use only the Ethernet on the modem to the router, then Ethernet and/or wireless to connect the machines.
