No Linksys access to internet.

I've been having lots of problems with my wireless router. Running straight from modem right now. Have a new wireless computer and things were fine for a few days. Now, I can't get online with the router. It's a Linksys WRT54G ver 1. I hate to call them- did that the other day and it was torture. Even though I was online at the time, they still made me check if the modem was working. Silly stuff like that. This forum is much better.

So, here is what I see. I don't see any lights on the wireless in the internet column of lights. The power light is on, the Link (WLAN) light is green, and the ACT light is flashing green. When I try to go to the router's settings page-192.168.13.1 I can't get to it. NOthing happens.

So, what do you think? Linksys wanted me to upgrade my firmware- I downloaded the version but they want me to call them to help me install it. It's 45 mins in the queue, and then those horrible procedures and I know it's an hour long call after the wait. Do you think it's the firmware? And if so, is there an easy install which can circumvent calling Linksys tech support?

Thanks to all

Do you have the CD that came with it? Whats the setup in ur house...like are u pluggin this router into your pc and usin laptops and other computers around the house or? I've always had a computer plugged directly into my wireless router and then other computers wirelessly connect to it. I would check to see if the ethernet cable is bad....or maybe one of the ports went bad.

Probably have CD somewhere. computer is only 4 days old- but was having problems with previous computer too. I only use the one laptop with the wireless. It says connectivity is very low-but there is reallyno connectivity. And why can't I get to the router via the address- does this mean that I need to reinstall.

Yeah its not seeing the router. I would try reinstalling the router...the firmware might have something to do with it too so i would probably do what linksys said if its not finding it, that could do the trick right there.

Time for a new router.

My trusty local computer person who has always supplied me with my laptops told me it's probably time for a new router, It has always been temperamental and likely will continue to behave this way.

i can't bear the thought of linksys support and needing them to install the firmware. It's so bad I'd rather spend $50 on a new router- and it won't be a Linksys. This thing has given me grief from Day one.

Thanks for the ideas.

It's easy to install the firmware for most routers. First, you'll need to reset the router to factory defaults, since you can't access it. Then, once you get to the setup pages, you need to find the "tools" or similar configuration page, and they'll have a firmware upgrade option. You navigate to the upgrade file from Linksys, and tell it to upgrade the firmware.

Reinstalled but still a problem

Ok- I'm soooooooo frustrated. I took the advice and got the install CD for Linksys and reinstalled. Also, upgraded the firmware. Worked ok for a few minutes- but the signal strength is still really low- and finally not at all. This thing is so annoying.

Also finding that the cable speed is slow-could it be the new computer? It worked beautifully first day or so- that must mean the computer is fine. But is it time for a new router??

If the signal strength is low, my guess is that you have interference, or the distance or obstructions between the router and the wireless client is too great. Have you tried changing the router's channel?

The router is right beside the computer. I wonder if the router is defective-although it works with my roomates computer and he is in the basement and I'm on the second floor.

I bought a netgear and it doesn't work-even after upgrading drivers etc. I wonder if there is a compatibility problem with the new computer.

If the wireless adapter on the laptop works in other locations, and you have the symptoms described, there's a couple of possibilities.

You have a configuration issue.
You have something that is interfering with the wireless signal.
You have a bad router.

You've tried two brands of routers, and you still have problems, so I'm thinking it's not a bad router.

What are the indications with the new Netgear router?

The Netgear wont' work- so bringing whole thing back to guy who sold it to me nd he's going to try to figure it out. Netgear may be defective or incompatible. Will let you know what the outcome is. Right now, I'm connecting directly to cable.

Need some details here.

Laptop make and model?
Wireless card make and model in laptop?
Internal or PCMCIA card?

If your laptop has an Intel 2xxx series (2100, 2200, 2915) wireless card, this is most likely your problem. The drivers for these card are really crap and need to be updated, even on a new computer.

Does the connection work fine if the laptop is connected by wire?

Why do you have an address of 192.168.13.1 vs. 192.168.1.1?

Are you using any form of VPN software?

Can you ping the router but not have an Internet connection?

Does the laptop wireless work fine at other locations?

Thanks JamesO for these questions. Will try to answer best I can.

Laptop is HPPavilion dv1000

Don't know which wireless card is in there- where would that show up? would that be by looking at device manager? If it is, then I have Intel R Pro/Wireless 2200BG Network connection. I have updated all the drivers and that didn't help

Laptop is ok if connected straight to cable- but browser is slow. Might be cable connection but cable people say everything is fine -but then they always say this so who really knows?

The address might be wrong- that was my Linksys address. Should I be going to 1.1? Would that change anything? Right now the router is back in the box but I can get it out and try again if you think I should.

What is VPN software- voice protocol? If so, no I'm not.

re: pinging. can/t quite remember how to do that. Do you go to run, type cmd and then at the prompt type ping 192.168.1.1? Can't remember if I did that-but could do that if you want me to and give you results.

Laptop worked fine at retailer's shop and actually worked ok for awhile with the Linksys. But the Linksys has always given me trouble- from day 1 on my other computer. Works, doesn't work. Have to frequently de-power and start again. So, who knows where the real problem is.

Roomate can't browse when Netgear is set up either- but can browse when Linksys is set up- but I can't browse with Linksys. He is in basement at opposte end of house and can connect-whereas I'm right beside router and can't connect-this refers to Linksys.

Much appreciated.

resolved-thank you

Netgear is now working. Brought it back to the person who sold everything to me. He updated some stuff-not sure what.Ran some tests. The windows firewall was blocking access to the router's page. Had no idea the firewall might do that. So, everything seems to be working now. Thanks for the help.
