no dialup

i guess i could have posted in dial up, but it seems as though my modem is functioning. i have gone through troubleshooting and modem properties; my modem seems to be connected but i still do not have a dialtone. i have checked my system for viruses, spyware... i just don't know what the problem is. my phoneline is fine as i am now on my laptop with you.. i have no problems with my old cricketty laptop. can someone please help me? if my modem is dead, why are there no error messages when going through troubleshooting. only when i try to connect does the no dialtone error come up.. thanks to all!!

I have seen modems die like this before. As far as the computer can tell, all is well, but never gets a dial tone to dial out.
In cases like this, I replace the modem. I have never put in a new modem and not have it fix this problem.

This can also happen if you have the wrong drivers installed for your modem, Or if you have a generic driver installed.

there is a driver that you have forgotten to install the one that produce the dial tone, dial tone can be heard to your external speaker or internal speaker

No problem.
We get a lot of thunder storms here in Georgia and lots of modems get knocked out by lightning.
It is a good idea to get a telephone line surge protector for your modem line. They are cheap and may save you from having to replace your modem again.
