dsl problems
we recently had a lightning storm and i have been trying to resolve connection issues since.
we have dsl service. my modem has five lights: power, ethernet, dsl, internet, activity. after the storm i had two lights: power, dsl. i called sbc to resolve my lack of connection. we figured out that my computer was not reading my ethernet card and that it must have gone bad. i put a new ethernet card in my computer. my computer now reads the ethernet card, but i still only have the power and dsl light on my modem. additionally, in network connections my lan connetion is shown, but it says that my network cable is disconnected. could my new ethernet card be bad? could the modem have been damaged in the storm? what should i do? thanks. |

The likely problem is that the modem was damaged in the storm. Was this modem protected by a surge protector for the power AND phone line? You may be eligible for replacement cost reimbursement.

i had a surge protector, but know i did not have the phone line running through it. stupid, i know.
would it be normal for the modem to be working partially (i.e. with the power and dsl lights on), but not sending the signal further? thanks for your help. |

That's not uncommon. I have a friend that just replaced his cable modem after a lightning strike took out the modem, router, and his MB. The modem actually works with the USB interface, but the Ethernet interface is dead.
