Installed NIC-- lost modem
We're thinking of getting DSL, but currently on dialup. Running Win98SE but machine did not have NIC. Installed 3com 10/100 NIC, and lost the video monitor, and the 56K v.90 modem. Took out the 3com NIC (which had been laying around the house--didn't even get to install the driver). Modem ran through like it was going to dial, but never recognized dial tone. Thought perhaps we'd
toasted the modem, and obviously we couldn't have a video port conflict. Purchased Linksys Network Everywhere PCI 10/100 NIC and a Comp USA 56K v.92 PCI modem. The NIC and drivers installed fine. Then put in the v.92 modem and driver. Had the same problem as with the old modem-- does its beeps, but never picks up on the dialtone. Dialtone is good--we traced to the wall, called out with a voice phone, etc. Get this error: line or address is being used by another device. Win98 says no conflicts. Help! TIA!!! Astrelfrog |

By the way, we have tried physically removing the NIC, uninstalling the drivers, reinstalling Win98, reinstalling the modem-- all to no avail. You can hear the modem 'ringing' the dialup number, but the line does not pick up. Using another computer, the same dialup number works fine. We're still working on this but making no progress. Please? Anyone?
