4 in 1 device
Hi all.
I recently got a used Dell laptop (Latitude C600) from Ebay. I also bought one of those wireless adapters (PCMCIA). I believe the distriutor is a Canadian company called Quetec. The box this adapter came in says "Made in Tiawan". The installation Cd has an icon named SoftGate installation Proceedures. I installed this per the instructions to the best of my ability but am unable to get it to connect to the internet. I think I did this correctly because the SoftGate manager has a green blinking light showing. This indicates proper operation. Does anyone have any experience with this adapter? I am a total new user and could use some pointing in the right direction. The instructions state that after installation, my comuter will be in AP mode. What does that mean? This can be changed to Station Mode. Does anyone know what that means? Thanks for any help. |

If you are trying to connect to a wireless router, you need to change
to station mode. AP stands for access point, and acts as an access for other computers. This is probably causing a DHCP conflict with the router,as both are trying to assign IP's

I am new to computers and am unfamiliar with some of the terminology. If, for example, I am at a wifi hotspot(Starbucs/Borders etc), and try to sign on to the internet, is that a wireless router? Should I be useing station mode or AP mode? What does "Acts as an access for other computers" really mean? Does it mean that whilst in that mode, my computer becomes somewhat of a central hub from which other remote computers may hook into? Thanks |

Yes,as an access piont,it pretty much becomes the hub for
other computers to connect. WIFI hot spots will be using a router or access point,so you will need to be in station mode to connect.

I'm still trying to figure the steps I need to take to get online when I'm using this wireless card. The reason it is confusing is because up till now all I have used is a dial up. I simply sign in to msn and I'm on my way.
I've made some progress though. I made the switch from AP mode to station mode and noted three networks were up and running. But what happens now? What steps do I take to be able to hook up to the internet? I realise that I should be able to utilise these but how does one determine which one is accessible, which is the best, etc. Do I connect somehow with one of them and click on to explorer------------I'm really perplexed at this stage. Thanks for any help. |

Re: 4 in 1 device
Hi, Ia m in the same boat. I bough the 4-in-1 USB for my kids computer & am about ot lose my mind trying to get it it work. It says it is connected to the correct network, I am in station mode but I can not get on the internet. When I go into the Quetec status it says "not connected to the internet" but I have no idea how to change that. If anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it.

Re: 4 in 1 device
Hi,
First off let me try and see if I understand your setup. What I understand is your network is sumwhat like this: You have your ISP (Internet Service Provider)-supplying you with an IP address >>> modem supplied from the ISP (please provide the exact name, model and manufacturer of modem and ISP's name) >>> Modem--im confused about this part---does your modem act as a wireless router and hand out IP addresses from DHCP??? (how does your DSL/Cable service get from modem to your computer) >>> then if so then you should see the SSID (name givin to the network...it may use the name of the modem as SSID) of the network..this is usually setup in the interface to the modem/router >>> you would then simply connect to your network. Usually, you would click on the name of the network and there should be a button that allows you to "connect". If when connecting it prompts you for a password then encryption was enabled and you need to enter the password that was either given to you or that you setup. Usually, WEP or WPA encryption. Please correct me and post the exact setup of devices that are in your network. Note: if you bought a wireless card (NIC) for your computer and you do not have an ISP and you plan on connecting to one of the 3 wireless networks that are not urs then this is illegal. It would be like wardriving--stealing someone's bandwidth whilst in the car, home, bike, etc. JeKyL |

Re: 4 in 1 device
quick note too...if you don't know what your SSID is then you can find out with the software that came with the 4 in 1 device. When you first get into the program window you should see 4 tabs: General Settings, Wireless AP, Devices and Mac Filtering.
Go to the Wireless AP tab and the SSID should be listed at the top next to SSID: Then when you know what your SSID is, you can locate it as you did when you noticed 3 networks and connect to the network that has your SSID. |

Re: 4 in 1 device
Thanks for the reply. Here's the situation. My sister & her boyfriend live next door, 50 +/- feet away. He has internet access and a wireless router. My computer routes to the internet through his computer via a Belkin USB wireless connector. I bought a similar Quetec connector for my kids computer which came with Softgate software. I found the item for sale on this website but can't find much in the way of tech support, here's the website showing what I'v got.
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?inv...at=NET&cpc=JAD It says it is connected to his network & everything looks great but it will not connect to the internet. When I pull up status on the actual Quetec device & click on the devices tab it says the "internet is not connected". There is a drop down in that section but there is not other choice in the drop down. I have gone over the pitiful manual that came with it & tried looking online but can not find anywhere where it tells me how to "connect" to the internet. Thanks for your help ! ! |

Re: 4 in 1 device
Ok I gotya, since your sharing the wireless connection from your sister, you need to make sure your Quetec is not acting as an Access Point, router or bridge. You want it to function as a wireless network connector. b/c your sister has the connection and they have the wireless router boosting the signal already. You need it to function as the Belkin USB wireless connector does. All you want to do then is connect up to her network.
