wireless won't connect
I have a Linksys wrt 54G which won't connect. I have disconnected both the modem and the router and reconnected- still nothing. I've refreshed and renewed and still nothing. I can connect to the internet via my DSL but can't with the router. If I check the lights on the router-this is what is green: power and link, act flashes sporadically. Nothing else is on. any ideas?

Yes, I can connect via my cable connection but can't connect wirelessly. I read some other posts and also experience timing out problems. One person said it was a problem with the linksys router. Is that true? Right now, I just want to figure out why I can't connect wirelessly- but i"m curious if my timing out is due to the router. My system is clean- I have run many checks on it and am not infected with spyware.
thanks |

So, you can connect to the reouter but not to the Internet through it? If you're using DSL you'll need to configure the router for PPOE.

Did you power cycle the modem when you changed the attached device? If not, that's most likely the problem. Do this:
Turn everything off. Turn on the modem, wait for it to sync with the ISP. Turn on the router, wait two minutes. Turn on the connected machine and see if it has a connection.

I had a smiliar problem with that router. The first thing I did was to log on to the Linksys website (while connected with the ethernet cable) and run their connection wizard. That resolved my issue. If that does not work, then I would think about returning the router for a new one.

Have you tested the wireless ethernet device on your computer? My wireless PCMCIA just stopped working - it is only about 6 months old. There were no bangs to indicated that it had died - I simply could no longer connect to my network wirelessly. I inserted a new card and was back on line in no time.

No, I haven't. How would you test this? BTW- I went to look at the wizard you mentioned- wasn't sure if I was looking at the righ thing. But it seemed to be a set up wizard- can you use that if everything is already set up?

If the lights on the ethernet card on the back of the computer are on (green) and there are not bangs by the adapter in the Hardware Device profile, then the only way to check it is to insert a new wireless card. And, yes, you can use the setup wizard even though your router is already set up.

problem solved.
Ok- problem solved. I called Linksys and they were embarking on a ridiculous fix- silly stuff like having me check if my modem is working even though I told them I was currently online and surfing while speaking to them- so obviously it was working. They still wanted me to check. Luckily (or unluckily) my laptop died right then and I couldn't complete the call. Phew!! I bought a new wireless laptop and presto- the wireless works. It was the card and of course they never suggested that but were advising downloading new firmware blah blah blah.
So you were right that it was the card. But now with a wireless, one less thing to worry about. thanks!!! ![]() |
