dsl only connects when dialing out on phone
I can only connect to the web if I'm dialing out on the phone (or at least have the phone off the hook). It's the only time I have a steady connection. Otherwise the modem (speed stream 4100, wired) indicators are flashing green and red.
This is a new SBC DSL service in SF bay area (CA). I've had the techs out 3x so far. Each one has checked phone lines, filters, and the modem. One tech replaced filters and modem with new ones. They're able to get me connected only after they've contacted their DSL center and then I'm able to stay online anywhere from 20mins to 2 hrs immediately after their service calls. But then all of a sudden I lose the connection. I started my "basic" troubleshooting and noticed one night that I could only connect to the web when I was on the phone. As soon as I hung up, I lost the connection. Has anyone encountered this problem before? And fixed it! The stats: IBM Net Vista 933mHz CPU NIC Ethernet card connected to Speed stream 4100 DSL modem. One phone line to the house. Thank you in advance for your help. Your comments are appreciated. |

Try connecting the DSL modem directly to the network interface jack and removing all other inside wiring from the mix. If that works properly, you need to consider upgrading your interior wiring.
Purchase a DSL splitter and install it at the telco service entrance. Run a direct line from the DSL port on the splitter directly to the DSL modem. Connect all of the other phone instruments to the telephone output of the DSL splitter. This is as good as it gets for DSL installations, and will usually solve in-house wiring issues.
