56k modem only connects at 26.4kbps

First of all, my dial-up modem used to connect at 53,333 bps. I then tweaked my modem settings to get better speed for this online game i play (one of the only good games you can play with dialup) but when I checked my connection icon, it showed Connected at 26,400 bps. My modem port settings are all at the max, and so are the Com Port settings. I have Windows Me. Anyone have any ideas?

You may want to try reinstalling the drivers so that your settings are reverted back. Me also includes the system restore function that may be worth trying.

If you are connecting at 53k I am pretty sure you are at the max possible speed for dial-up and tweaking won't do anything. I know it's called a 56k modem, but the national FCC limits the electric usage in the phonelines to 53k per person.

Try a different dial up number. Some ISP's use modem banks that drop rates when they get busy with many users.

There may also be phone line impairments as well. Different dial up numbers can route your call through different telephone offices and interconnects as well. But this will not help of there is wire issue between you and the first telephone switching office.

Dial up can be a real crap shoot at times.

More than likely the problem is not with your machine or modem.

Here is some info on the FCC 53k limit:
