Advice would be appreciated!

Hi guys,

Atm i have an exisiting AOL Broadband Gold subscription at 1.1MBPS, and the modem is a BT Voyager 100 USB ADSL Modem. I was just wondering if any of you guys know which routers would be compatible with AOL? I was told by someone in my Counter Strike Clan that i need one that will let me change the MTU value. As i dont know what this means i thought i would post here for advice. I did have a quick look through past threads to see if the same issue has come up but it did not seem apparent to me. I would like a Wireless connection so i could hook my Laptop and PSP up to it.Thanks in Advance, Tom.

I don't believe AOL will work over a router simply due to how AOL "works."

There are people that get AOL working with routers, but I believe it's dependent on the specific class of service and the equipment they happen to use. I'd get a real ISP if this were me...

I would too. Click http://marahs-aol-log.livejournal.com/ to find out why.

im a tech support from sbcyahoo and the recent aol-sbc merger allows both to use the best of both worlds... and for the wireless router, try contacting our sales department and look for a 2wire1000sw

One of the many reasons for getting rid of AOL is that they filter many sites, and it's not just harmful or porn sites. Just do some research, and you'll see that there are far better ISP options than AOL. I'll take my Internet plain, no filtering if you please.

Right on, right on! Yes, indeed, they filter many sites, and block ones they dislike with 404 errors and the like. They filter member email by deciding which websites and people can send email to you, and blocking everyone else's. AOL also works with the federal government, turning over user-data it collects from subscribers for warrantless search and seizure as per the Patriot Act. In addition, AOL 9.0 Optimized SE is so badly designed that it's browser gives Javascript errors when accessing many websites. The disconnects with AOL are constant--every 45 minutes as per their "user timer", not to mention their modems are overloaded and drop users constantly. When I had AOL I had to reconnect an average of 5-6 times every 3-4 hours. Quite an experience. If all that's not bad enough, the service is almost impossible to cancel. Call reps are trained to talk you out of it and to offer free months of service so you'll stay. Why would anyone pay to go through all that with their ISP?

That said, I'm still with People PC, Johnwill! I'm probably getting a cable modem in March, when the rates (finally) drop in my area. You know the only good thing about P-PC is the connection never gets dropped. I mean never! I don't think I've been booted off once in the 4 months that I've used it. Their home page still doesn't load much of the time, which gets me all frazzled because I can't "right-click to refresh page with full quality" without it, which ruins the graphics for me. But what do I want? All dial-up sucks, right?

im back, and what you guys say about aol is very untrue and biased. AOL filters it ,

IF you leave 'filter my searches' option as 'enabled'

i bought a Netgear D834GT ADSL2+ MODEM + Wireless Router.

not only does it work very well with aol...i dont have to use my aol software..so its just like using a normal isp.

+ i dont no how u cud of got disconnected so much... ive never been dsconnected in my life..maybe ur digital TV or phone line was interfering. anyway thanks guys.

Thanks for reminding me how AOL stays in business--on the backs of ignoramuses like YOU. How can you say to anyone, much less "us guys" (presumably me and Johnwill) that what we say about AOL is "very untrue and biased"? Which part is untrue? Which part is biased? Why do you waste thread space and everyone's time with vague comments like that?

You don't seem to understand what me and Johnwill mean by "filter" so let's use another word: BLOCK. Get it now?

AOL BLOCKS your access to many websites! Don't believe me? Try accessing Alex Jone's websites from AOL. Try accessing the Remnant of God website from AOL. And no, I'm not posting links, you can Google them yourself. What do you see? 404 messages--right? You see 404 messages, which in case you're not up to speed, mean that your ISP has FORBIDDEN you from seeing them. That's AOL. Do I like--or care--about either of those blocked websites? Not particularly. But the fact that AOL won't let you see them means that they are denied their 4th Amendment right to free speech, which means they can't be seen by YOU, the AOL customer too ignorant to appreciate what we're saying here. The fact that AOL blocks many sites from being viewed in YOUR browser pisses ME off. That's why I have an entire website devoted to why I hate AOL and what you can do to get their crappy software off of your computer. Have I cleared everything up here? Or do you still think I'm a biased liar? Welcome to my web page, buddy, because that's where YOUR comments are going to wind up. Good work.

As to your other ridiculous comments: you don't need AOL to access the Internet. No one with hi-speed does. So WHY are you paying up to $24.95 a month for the service? For the chat rooms? The AOL communities? The pop-ups and spyware? No? Are you paying America Online to read your email? You may so "No, I'm not," but yes, you are, you're paying them through the nose for the "privilege" of having every one of your emails read and deleted if they don't "like" what those
messages contain.

Don't believe me? Read this link: http://www.computergripes.com/Aol.ht...d%20Censorship. Better yet, just read my whole site: http://marahs-aol-log.livejournal.com/. Everything that people like you don't know about AOL--and need to know for your online safety, not to mention your computer's, is there, from soup to nuts. Will you read it? No. Probably not. You'll finish reading this reply, decide AOL's "never bothered you much", and go about your life, right? You and millions of other willfully ignorant customers keep AOL a rich and happy company with an eye right up your backside at all times.

As to your final comment, "+ i dont no how u cud of got disconnected so much... ive never been dsconnected in my life" have you ever thought of consulting a dictionary before writing in these public forums? This isn't AIM!

My best guess tells me you meant to say "And I don't know how you could have gotten disconnected so much. I've never been disconnected in my life." Well, AOL's software automatically disconnects you every 45 minutes if you don't click the "Stay Online" option within 10 minutes of their "Reminder, you've been online for..." box appearing on your browser. If you click "Yes, stay online" every 45 minutes, then you're right, you've never been disconnected. I have trouble believing you or anyone else can keep up with being disconnected more than once every hour automatically. Why anyone would pay up to $24.95 a month for the "privilege" of being booted offline evey 45 minutes is a head-scratcher. Why?

Why did I get disconnected more frequently than every 45 minutes? Why not ask AOL? Call them up and say "duh" in Tech Forums wants to know. Let's see...their modems are overloaded? They have one phone number for every 45,000 subscribers? (True story!) Every time I opened an app (that's a computer program, in case you're unaware) with the AOL open, my CPU overheated? (Another true story--my harware wasn't nearly strong enough to handle eveything AOL runs in the backround). A combo of all these factors? Who knows? Who cares? If you don't care enough to do the right thing and get AOL's crappy software off your computer, why ask me about mine? Worry about your own stuff.

In case anyone's been looking in the last ten minutes since I posted this, yes it has been edited, I hate spelling mistakes and AIM-like "grammer".
