Peaceful coexistence on DSL with torrent and other traffic
On the advice of the members here I built my home net
with a D-Link DSS+5 switch along with an Actiontec 701 modem supplied by the ISP with my service. On an older PC1 I have the com gear above attached to a Tyan Trinity board, Linksys eth card and want to use that as a server for torrents always on. On a 50ft cable I have my newer rig which is a MachSpeed X-Caliber board which has VIA Rhine II onboard ethernet. I have the torrent server throttled down and doing that i am able to send mail, load my websites... things are almost back to normal of what was my stand alone machine before hookups. What sorts of things can I do to maximize things besides edging the torrent server speed up until I see some degradation of service to my more active newer machine? Upload/download speed is throttled at 5 Kbps in the BitComet .59 prog. and sending mail and such is going ok. 5kbps is enough for maybe one feed, so I want to know what can be done to squeeze some more juice out of the dsl line. Average up/down on a single pc connection is about 40kbps with spikes during new downloads of as high as 180. A once in a blue moon thing. Thanks for the help on getting going with this in the first place. |
