Exclamation Limited or no DSL connectivity

I have always been able to connect to the Internet with my DSL, however, I have always had the limited or no connectivity sign over the icon. This has never been an issue because I have always been able to connect. I recently tried to network my sons computer and can't get a connection for either computer through the router. I have ruled out a bad router, card, and cable. I noticed that my son's computer has the same warning icon and then found that my daughter's laptop has the same warning, even though she connects at another residence. My DSL provider said not to worry because this is a normal occurance that began after SP2. Others have told me that I need to update the driver or limit my firewall settings. I am not overly computer savy and would greatly appreciate some input. Could this be my router problem and should I be worried about the warning? Thanks much, Wiskkey

Exactly what do you see? Can you do a PrtScr and post a snippit that shows the graphic? It's certainly not normal for all the machines to display this. I have several machines running SP2, and it doesn't happen with either wired or wireless.

Do you have multiple network interfaces, say a wired and wireless one?

The DSL icon has the triangle caution symbol over it. When you click on it, it says limited or no connectivity. When you click on repair, it says that the network did not assign a network address. Then it says that it cannot renew the IP address? I have always been able to connect but, this is troubling especially if it is the cause of not being able to transmit through the router? I'm really out of my league with this. Thanks for your help.

I think we'll need make/model of any or all of the networking equipment, and the version/patch level of Windows in use too. Also, do this:

Open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

The reason you have the disconnected graphic is that you have other Ethernet connections that are not connected. This is normal.

Once you ruled out the connectivity issue, I went back into the router setup and changed the password. I finally got it to work, so I guess it was a setup problem after all. Thank-you for your help. I'm learning a lot from your site.
