Network Unplugged error

A co-worker of mine here who is even less of a tech wizzard than I am, is having an issue with connecting his PC to the Internet - sounds simple but here it goes... He had a PC built for him so it's not specific brand and is running windows XP. He has a wireless router hooked up for a laptop connection. He is using an Earthlink DSL connection for internet service. There has been a Lan Network Connection is Unplugged error popping up on the PC and he is unable to connect to the internet. This happened about 6 months ago and after speaking with both Earthlink and Microsoft help desks (who both said it was the other's issue) someone told him to replace the ethernet card (which I thought usually last forever). Well, that was done and it worked fine for about 4 months but he is receiving the error message once again and cannot connect to the internet. The odd thing about it is that the laptop has no problem connecting to the internet from the wireless router even when the PC is not connecting. And to clarify a touch more - he just told me that the PC does "sometimes" connect but he could be on 1 min or 10 min then get kicked off and not be able to get back on but the laptop is still connected.
Any suggestions?

Send a message via MSN to your mom
have you tried an alternate ethernet cable or different ports on the router?

I gave him a new ethernet cable today to try this weekend. I didn't think to ask him about different ports on the router because the problem first began before the router was even connected.... we'll see how the new cable does this weekend. Thx
