Connected......but not

Well this is certainly a first for me. I recently installed a Belkin Wireless G PCI card in my girlfriend's Dell desktop. She recently got Verizon DSL and got a westell wireless router with her package. Installation of the card went smoothly and it picks up the signal from the router located downstairs perfectly.

Here is where it gets interesting...

When clicking on Internet Explorer no page can be displayed, although the signal strength is good and the status is connected. At first i checked the computer downstairs where the router is located and it was fine, i was able to surf on IE perfectly. Her dell is acting like it is not connected but it is. AIM won't work, here peer to peer software won't work (limewire) and her IE won't work. However when starting AOL 9.0 internet browser, it works fine, you can bring up any page you want, but when it prompts you if you are going into a non - secure sire, even if you say ok it still won't display the page. Any ideas?

The only thing i have done recently to her computer was upgrade to service pack 2 and downloaded all the critical xp updates. However I was able to do this before we started having this problem. It seems that after we updated xp it started screwing up. If anyone has any clue on what steps to take I would appreciate it. I would prefer to do it myself rather thatn paying someone $100 an hour for doing something that is probably simple.

And by the way I have already re-installed the wireless card twice...

Thank you in advance

if you have any firewalls running while you are installing the card, turn them off. if they aren't running, turn them on. then re-instal the card.

I had the exact same problem when i installed my Belkin wireless G pci card in my dad's dell pc. I turned on the firewall (of all things) and re-installed it, now it works perfectly

Send a message via MSN to your mom
If her dad's computer is connecting via xp dialer, the westell 327 won't act as a wireless router. If the internet (little globe) light on the modem is lit, ignore what I've said, but if the light is off this is what you need to do...

setup a connection in the router rather than through her dads computer

some other things to check:

is her computer connected via dialup as well as dsl? this may explain why her computer is connecting with aol.

are you looking at offline files on aol?

is her or her dad's comp connecting to a stray wireless network? perhaps they are connecting to different networks. this may explain why only one computer is

try to hardwire the computer to the router.. see if it works, this may determine a possible issue with the computer rather than wireless components

I don't know how tech saavy you are, so ask if you want me to clarify any of that.
