Roll Eyes Dialup problems

I have an HP Pavilion running with XP; 2.10 GHz; 1g ram. It uses an Agere Systems PCI soft modem. The computer is protected with Norton Security. As we live (happily) out in the sticks, I am stuck with dial up internet. I had been connecting regularly at 44K until about a month ago. Suddenly, with no changes to the system that I know of - no new programs, etc - I can only connect with a top speed of 28.8K. Our laptop, plugged into the same telephone jack, with the same telephone cables, dialing the exact same number still connects at 44K. I have run Adaware and Spybot. Neither program has detected anything. Restoring to an earlier date didn't help. Defrag done. Cookies and temp files are deleted regularly. I purchased an external modem, uninstalled the soft modem. The new modem still connects at a top speed of 28.8K. I have been to the control panel and set modem speed to various speeds - no change. There must be something else in my computer that thinks I have a 28K modem. What can I try next?

Its time to make a call to your ISP and ask some questons, it seems your system is performing OK! Is your ISP your telephone provider, if so, they could have made some changes in their Central Office. How far are you from the Telephone Central Office?

Hi,

What you might take a look at is your modem drivers. WinXP will load modem drivers and tell you they are the best for your sytem. That is baloney in most cases, because they only load v.90 drivers initially. Most more modern modems have v.92 capabilities. What I would do if I were you is:

First, go to your modem manufacturer's website and download the latest modem drivers. (I know you have a disk, but go to the website anyhow)

Go in to the device manager and uninstall your modem.

Shut down

Remove your modem from the computer and move it to PCI #3 (that is the third slot down from the AGP port)

Boot back up and let the computer find your modem.

When it is up and recognized, then update the drivers and FORCE it to take the drivers you have downloaded, even if it says they are not digitally signed. (otherwise, even though Windows will object, select your own location and make it load the drivers you have downloaded)

Give that a whirl and see if that helps.
