I'm back JohnWill- Voyager 2100 as wireless router only

Hello again,
Can you recall my last thread ? - line attenuation 60, margin invariably 6 to 7. Only modem which seemed to cling on to a connection was the Speedtouch 330 USB. Want to use a Voyager 2100 as wireless router only i.e. not using internal modem.

I purchased a Speedtouch 510 LAN modem. Waste of money - connection poor. I have now cracked it. I purchased a Draytek Vigor2200USB router, connected the Speedtouch 330 USB modem and bingo I now connect to the PC with a LAN cable.

My head cannot get round the IP settings of the USBmodem , the Vigor router and what I now need to do to use the Voyager for wireless only. Can you provide more advice to this weary old fogey please. Cheers.

For a standard configuration, you should simply reset the router to factory defaults, and set the machines to automatically obtain their addresses. I'm not sure about the USB modem to router configuration, since I've never even seen one of those, it's the first router I've seen that connects to a USB modem.

Doesn't the manual guide you to how to configure the router/modem combination? Was there any reason you didn't simply buy an ADSL router/modem combo and dispense with the issues of connecting USB to something?

Oh the pain I have had. I am a long way from the exchange. BT had to fit a new master linebox with inbuilt ADSL socket. They said all was fine for 512k (all that could be achieved) and indeed it was with the Speedtouch USB modem supplied by Virgin. I could connect perfectly a any time of day or night.
I then purchased the Voyager 2100 wireless modem router plus wireless adaptors for laptop and PC. Worked fine during the day but would not connect at all between 5 pm to 8 am the next day. And it was always like this. Line stats indicated a poor attenuation and during one day I noticed that the margin started to fall as evening approached. Thus about 9 to 11 during the day falling to 6-ish at 5 pm when the Voyager then disconnected totally for the evening.

I got advice from you about my idea of then connecting a wired modem into the Voyager and ignoring the modem in the Voyager. So I purchased a Speedtouch 510 wired modem and it did not connect at all. So having been at this now for about 6 weeks I was almost ready to bin all and go back to Dial-up when I read about the Vigor and risked a bit more cash.

After a bit of messing about upgrading firmware etc I just have the USB modem plugged into the Vigor and now have a wired output from the Vigor to the laptop. And it is working beautifully at any time of the day.

So now I am ready to have another bash at wireless using the Voyager.

Thanks for the guidance. Regretfully I am having trouble understanding NAT usage IP / DHCP / gateway /DNS server addresses in the context of what I am supposed to do with the Voyager. But with your guidance last time and again now I will hopefully make some headway. Thanks.
