Modem or Router?

I dont think my connectivity problem is my modem but rather my router. Sometimes when I first boot up, I may have a connection and then again, I may not. I tried resetting the router, unplugging it for about a minute, rebooting...nothing. I decided to go direct to the modem and bypass the router and got my connection back. Seems obvious the problem is within the router. However, I type in ipconfig /all in the command prompt and get the IP address with the router connected?. This morning I got a connection fine but, after about 30 minutes or so, lost it. Can I pretty much assume the problem is the router?

Router is a Linksys BEFSR41 v3 that's about 2 1/2 years old. Modem is Toshiba PCX 2200.

I have seen several Linksys routers do this. I think your are right about the router going out.

Yep. I had the same model for about 2 years then two of the ports died without explanation. I ended up buying another one since it is a decent SOHO router.

That's what I was afraid of...thought these routers had a five year warranty but, not sure. I can access the http:\\192.168.1.1 address but no connection with the router/modem together. Checked time lease and it was at 0 so, I can only surmise the router is on it's way out.

I like netgear routers. If the linksys has a 5 year warranty, get another one and see if you can get 2-3 out of it also.

I'm still looking for my receipt...got it at CompUSA. I'm pretty sure I saw a five year warranty somewhere. May have to go to Fantasy Island to get that kind of warranty these days!

I was wrong...found the box and is says 1-year limited warranty.

Just an update note...it was the router. Bought a new one that was a version up from the one I had and it installed well with no problems and all is back to operationg as usual. I had the other one for two years and two months...warranty was only good for a year. Nothing electronic last more than a few years anymore. I've got some Harmon-Kardon equipment I bought in 1983 that still gives service!! Try that today.
