New modem installation

Hi. I bought a used 98 Compaq Desktop Pro computer for my kids, but did not have a modem.Bought a new modem for it and installed it in the PCI slot.Computer would not recognize the new modem.Was getting all kinds of errors. Contacted seller and was told to scrub pci interface with eraser.I don't understand any of this.I am not a computer tech. Could you please tell me what an eraser is and where do i find one. Also, how do i scrub the pci interface? Thank You very much for any help!

what they are talking about is take a pencil eraser and clean the contacts on the edge of the card where it plugs in to the PCI slot.
