hi
a friend recently asked me to help him with sharing his internet and i decided to and after finally making him some cat5 cable, i can now get the two pcs (xp-dont know what version can ask though) to ping with a few dropouts but generally ok. The two pcs can also share files and map etc...but they cant share internet. ive tried running network wizard for a quick fix and also set the surfbaords default IP (from what ive read) to 192.168.100.1 with no luck. my main problem i think is that i dont know what to set the gateway and NS as. heres the setup: internet=>cablemodem=>USB to pc(virtual NiC)=>PC1=>NiC2=>crossover cat5e=NiC=>PC2. have i left anything out? I know i usually set the gateway as the NiC to the modem but the virtual NiC gets its IP assigned as it is the external IP. I am open to using any software but no harware. Also i dont mean to be anoying but can i get an answer asap as i was supposed to get it working a week ago and said it sh00d be working by saturday (2 days away) PLS HELP! Thx in Adv |

I have run the same setup.
The nics and the modem should all be set to automatic. TCP?IP for them shouls be set to automatic discovery of IP and DNS. Your problem may lie in the fact that many cable companies use a proxy,so set automatic discovery of proxy. Then run network setup wizard on computer 1 and set it to connects directly to the internet using the modem. Run network setup wizard on computer 2 and set it to connects through a LAN using the installed NIC. After this,if there is an active connection to the ISP,you should be able to view the IP's and the gateway by opening a command prompt and typing ipconfig and hit enter on the first computer. |

You shouldn't need to do any configuration with IP addresses. As you said, your first pc should get an external IP address from your cable modem. You then Setup Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the network adapter that is getting Internet Access. You shouldn't really need to do anything to the client machine other than just set its TCP/IP propterties to obtain an IP address automatically.
Here is a great guide to setting up ICS. I would follow the path for "enable ICS manually for a broadband Internet connection." If you can't get ICS to work there is always AnalogX's Proxy Server. http://www.analogx.com/contents/down...work/proxy.htm |
