Can't access website (or is my job in jeopardy?)

Hey fellas. I have a big problem. I'm a moderator at www.golom.com. For some reason, a few days ago, I was suddenly unable to get to the site. I AIM'ed another mod to find out if the site was down and he told me it was working OK.

The admin (Golom's his username, of course) checked my account and said everything was good on his end.

I have pinged the site and it showed up OK (no packets lost). I have checked my security settings and DNS, etc. to make sure his site isn't blocked. I got on my ISP's website (Charter Communications) and chatted with a tech, who wasn't of any use, though I haven't yet called them, so getting another tech support person might be of some use...

In addition, Pancake, from the HijackThis Logs Forum wanted me to tell you I'm free of malware. My thread there is http://www.techsupportforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=50 Though he couldn't help me gain acces to the site, his knowledge and expertise has helped me with other problems I've had with my computer. Thanks Pancake!!

I have a Motorola Surfboard SB4101 cable modem. Can you help me keep my job as a moderator? Any advise will be highly appreciative.

What browser are you using? If you are using Firefox, see if you can access the site from Internet Explorer. Also, try deleting your cookie for that site and remove all temporary Internet files for your browser.

Yessir, I've thought about that. I was originally using IE and thought that was the problem, so I installed FireFox. I've deleted all cookies and temporary internet files and still no go.

No. I've tried getting through via IP before and it simply isn't working. I just don't understand how that one site is impossible for me to access.

EDIT: Not that I'm looking forward to it, but would a reformat of my hard drive fix the problem? In the HijackThis thread, Pancake instructed me to use DELDOMAIN, which ended up not working for me. I know that program's used by people who maintain servers, but do the errors have anything to do with my problem? I'm desperate!! Desperate, I tell you! ...and I thank you for your help. You guys absolutely work above the call of duty. I say they should double your salary!

Are you able to ping the site without losing any packets? If this applies to you, have you tried from another computer on your network?

I wouldn't reformat over something like this, however, you can try creating a new user account and see if you can access the site from it.

You can also search google for a public http proxy to use for your browser. You should be able to access the site that way for the time being.

I just pinged the site again and results were Packets Sent=4, Received=4 (0% loss).

I'm using Win98SE. Would it matter if I were to make up a new user account? I'm ready to try anything at this point.

A new Google Proxy? What would I search for to access the site from there?

Now, I can go to the old site, www.golom.net, but not the updated (and newly launched) .com site. This is just crazy...

Probably not. It's late and I assumed you were using XP for some reason.

Just ignore everything else.

Try downloading this Winsock Fix utility. If that doesn't work, then it's probably not a problem on your end and you might just have to check the site at a later time.

Well, I've downloaded the Winock Fix Utility and still no luck. I called my ISP and the tech said it was a problem on the admin's side and to check back with him. I'll wait for him to email me back and see if we can't fix the problem from his side.

I appreciate the help. Thanks, Resolution.

The admin contacted me on AIM and said that there's no problem on his side of it. I haven't been able to access the site for quite sometime...it's been almost a week now. And all the other moderator have no problem.

Should I reformat my hard drive or request my ISP to replace my modem? Or is there another alternative?

One thing to ask Charter to do. I have them myself and they are a pain but if you can get a good tech see if he can't get them to Clear their local cache of that website.

All ISP's use a cache just like you do on the computer and they may have an issue there where it is blocking it for whatever reason.

Also have you tried Reinstall IE on the computer.

You can select it from your ad remove programs and remove it from there.

Also what IE browser are you using...sometimes there are issues with IE 6.0 and Win98. May want to convert back to IE 5.5

IE isn't the problem if he can't reach the site from Firefox either.

Hooty, I'll call Charter back and see if they'll do that for me. Thanks.

Here's an update for you all, though. Early this morning, I tried Golom.com and it finally worked. It took forever to load up and I'm sure it nearly timed-out, but it worked.

However, now it's not working anymore...

This sounds more like a routing issue with your ISP, I can't imagine this being your computer's configuration. I had this kind of issue with Comcast last year for a software vendor in Germany, it took me two weeks of browbeating the Comcast support guys for them to finally admit they had a routing issue and fix it. I couldn't get to a specific range of IP addresses, but I could dial up my backup ISP and access the site just fine.

If you don't have a dial-up ISP, I suggest you find one like PGH-Connect that is free unless you use your free time. I keep it around just for this kind of testing, as well as traveling where broadband isn't available to me.

I've bookmarked that site of yours, john. And I'd like to announce to you all that I get to keep my job. The site's working now, loading fast and with no problems. Thanks you all. You've saved my life!!!

Do you know what the cause was or did it just start working?

Good question. I may have to give you some credit here. I called my ISP back and asked them to clear their cache. The guy on the other end of the line said something like, "Yeah, well it's not a problem we can fix for you. You'll need to have your admin to fix your account on his end. Just get him to delete your account and recreate it. I know what I'm talking about...I have a friend who's a forum admin and he's had similar problems...blah blah blah"

I never asked my admin to do anything to my account and now, suddenly, it's working perfectly.

Thanks again!
