sudden drop of wireless internet?

I hope somebody out there can help me with my small (I hope) wireless network problem.

I have a linksys WAG54GS wireless modem/router, with which I had a wireless connection set up with my home PC so I could access the internet. This was working fine for weeks, but now for some reason the PC cannot connect to the internet, even though the status shows connection with the router via the windows connection wizard and an excellent signal of 100%.

I have a laptop which when I connect via ethernet on the router, works fine for the internet. However I cannot see the PC on my network, even though windows says my PC is connected with excellent signal strength - I dont know whetehr this is the problem i.e. the PC isn't connected even though it says it is. I haven't tried connecting my PC via ethernet to see if that works, as I dont have an ethernet cable long enough to reach.

My home PC is on Win XP SP1 with ZoneAlarm, connecting through a Compaq wireless USB adapter. I have disabled ZoneAlarm thinking this may have been the problem, but still nothing. The router has an open connection and is set to both B and G connections, with no security/firewalls.

I didn't change any settings at all on either the PC or the router, and cannot understand why it should suddenly stop.

Looking at the suggestions in the threads already in circulation, I have checked the windows IP configuration:

SP2 fixed a lot of wireless issues, I suggest you start there.

Try "power cycling" the router. Unplug the power lead from the back of the router, wait about 3 min. and then plug it back in.

On a good day, the router resets itself and all is well.

i also have a linksys router, but mine has a problem w/ dropping the internet conection on the wireless LAN only, you just have to reboot it but, it is so anoying, my advice is to never buy from cisco agian unless you are an IT tech who knows the equipment

I am an IT tech that knows this equipment and I say do not by a linksys router. I have at lots of problems with them. I use a netgear at the house and I can not remember the last time I had to power cycle it to get a connection back.

My antique D-Link DI-614 just got a power cycle for the first time in months today. It didn't need it, but I had to replace the UPS that it was connected to.

Hi--

if you are getting an ip address of 169.254.x.x you are pulling a non-routable ip therefore you will not connect to the internet...there are a few solutions:

1: on the pc click start>>run>>type in cmd>>in the black command prompt box type ipconfig /release then the ip address and subnet mask should show as all zeroes...then type in ipconfig /renew and the ip address should renew...if it renews to the 169.254.x.x again unplug the ethernet cable from the modem and router (if there was indeed a router in the setup) then run the first step of the process again...before typing ipconfig /renew plug the cable back in...this time you should get a routable ip address i.e. 192.x.x.x if you get a 10.x.x.x you are still not going to be able to access the internet

2: turn off the computer, unplug the ethernet, power, and phone cables(in that order) from the modem then the router wait for 15-30 seconds plug everything back in using the same sequence. Click start>>run>>cmd>>ipconfig (enter) and see what ip address you get

if the 169.254.x.x stays after all this you may have a corrupted Operating System and should call Microsoft or MacIntosh to find out what to do.

Possibly correct, however I've got a WAG54GS, for my sins, and had the same problem. Wireless devices would say they're connected to the router but would not get a routable IP address from the router. One machine is my laptop I also use for work. At work it connects to the wireless lan there with no problems.

SUGGESTION: Always check your wireless devices against another 'working' LAN if possible before assuming it's a problem with that device.

SOLUTION: Print the contents of the main and wireless security pages of your admin console http://192.168.1.1 (etc). Then go to Administration and select "Factory Defaults" then re-enter all of your settings. At least that worked for me after several hours of searching the web for answers and contacting support.

I tried Linksys' support guidance but it wasn't very helpful.
