My Wireless Router is about to be thrown out the window

Ok, since I've moved into my house, I've been trying to set up my wireless router for my roomates. THE CACA WONT WORK. I've been trying for damn near a week and it ain't working out. It says it's connected to the internet but I can't surf the net. Also, I can access the configuration menu by typing in the IP adress of the router in Internet Explorer. I've done the damn wizard a million times. Is there a driver I'm missing?
The model is the D-Link DI-524 (Revision A).
This is how I have it conected: I've got the cable going to the cable modem and an ethernet cord going from there to the router. All the right lights are on at this point. I then plug my notebook into the router with an ethernet cord. My computer says its connected to the internet and all the right lights are on. However, I can't surf the damn net and my roomates can't pick up a signal that belongs to our router. Please help me out, I know you guys get a million of these each week.

are you connecting to the router using straight through patch cables,not crossover and have you enabled dhcp in the router

What says it's connected to the internet, the router or the computer. Router Connects the to internet, then router splits the internet connection for all the computers. It will show that you are connected at the bottom right hand of your screen but that's the connection to the router. You have to check to make sure that the router is connected to the internet.

To do so, browse to your router's config page and check the status of the router to see if it says it's connected, connecting or disconnected. If it doesn't say connected on the router then you are not on the internet.

Follow the steps below:

-First check to make sure everything is connected properly, the WAN port on the router should be connected to the modem and that the computers are connected to the LAN port.
- On a computer that's hard wired to the router, click on start>run and type in CMD. A command prompt will come up.
- Type in ipconfig /all and hit return. Not the default gateway it should say 192.168.0.1 unless you changed the settings.
- Now open your web-browser and go to http://x.x.x.x where the x's is the ip address of the gateway and click on go.
- It will ask you for your username and password, username should be admin and password should be blank or admin unless you changed it.
- Once you log in you will see the status tab between tools and help if i remember right, click on status.
- Here you will see LAN, WAN and Wireless, at this point we only care about the WAN.
- Tell us what it says under WAN

We also need to know if you DSL or Cable at home.
