Is DSR necessary for a modem connection?

I'm soldering a cable to connect my Pocket PC to my cell phone in order to dial out (for an internet connection). I'll probably just be at 14.4, but may go faster if my service plan changes.

A cable I can order with the proper connector is prewired with DCD, RXD, TXD, DTR, RTS, CTS, and ground, but there is no wire soldered to the terminal for DSR.

Is DSR necessary for a modem connection?

Not necessarily. If the pre-made cable comes that way, my guess is that it's not required.

That would be logical, however the cable is intended to be multi-purpose (for an HP hx4700), not specifically for connection to a modem. One end of it will need to be soldered to a cell phone plug. From what I've read, modern modems use DSR, but also I can't seem to find any pinout diagram for my cell (Motorola v120e) which actually has DSR, so I still don't know the answer.
