Modem won't work

Hi folks

I recently upgraded to a new machine with XP so I thought I would let my kids have the old computer.

It had a lot of junk on it so I decided to reinstall Win 98 (SE) so they could have a clean system. I formatted the drive and reinstalled everything and it all works fine except I can't get the modem to work. I didn't change any hardware.

The computer recognises the modem and allows a dial up. It connects to the ISP and then says "verifying user name and password".

It then drops out and says unable to establish a connection (or similar). The name and password are correct. It is not the connection because my new computer works fine over the same line.

I have talked to the ISP over the phone and all my settings are correct. I even bought a new modem and installed it with the new drivers, still no luck.

Any thoughts?

When checking modem it says "working properly"

My System

Do you let windows insert the user name and password?
If you do when the login panel comes up delete any entry there and insert them manually

Just wondering , how do you have the two computers connected.
eg.My desktop is adsl downstairs and I got a laptop with a crossover cable upstairs that has no modem in it at all. Are your two on Internet Connection Sharing?

Two computers are not connected except that they use the same line (not at the same time)

In respect of Kodi's question, if I don't supply the user name and password I get exactly the same response - fairly promptly. However on my XP system if I don't put in the user name and password I get an invalid password message after some delay.

That would tend to indicate my computer rather than the ISP wouldn't it?

It could be that your ISP is not recognising your User name or password, I would check with them and see what is set up in your account details.
When you get that message I believe that you have sucessfully logged onto the ISP terminal but it does not recognise you so I think your computer is alright and the problem is with your ISP

Solved: Modem won't work

ISP is OK so I formatted the drive again and re-installed WIN98 again and this time it worked.

Go figure
